Exercise Focus: Full Body Training
I have avoided exercising with Jillian for years! In the snippits I had seen her, I found her personality overwhelming and demeaning… I know she is known as America’s toughest trainer, I just don’t find that form of motivation to get me moving. But this dvd was a good workout, with fun banter between her and her fellow athletes.
Hardbody does give some beginner alterations, but true beginners might have a hard time keeping up the pace with this one. This is a tough full body workout that will get you a sweating. Jillian also shows advanced moves during the exercises, for those that want to push their workout to the next level.
There are two 40 minute workouts included with Harebody. Level 1 is a good intermediate to advanced workout. Level 2 is definitely harder than Level 1. Again, Jillian shows some modification for exercises in Level 2 so you can adapt it to your own level.
Jillian alternates her exercises in this workout to utilize both a strength workout and a cardio workout. She calls her method Metabolic Training. She has tried to incorporate all of the latest scientific evidence that will get you the best workout in the shortest amount of time. So, Metabolic Training is Jillian’s version of HIIT training. And it definitely gets you a good workout in a short amount of time.
There were two things that I really didn’t like about this workout routine.
The first one is Jillian does two circuits in each workout and focuses on one leg per circuit… so hopefully you can remember which leg you worked on for that exercise 15 minutes ago… otherwise you’re working on the same side twice…. I had a hard time keeping track of which side I was supposed to be working on the second time through so, I chose to extend the exercises that focused on one leg/ side at a time and do both sides before moving on and then just backed up the dvd to where I was…. Which is a great option since it is a dvd!
The other issue was the DJ… There are shots with the live DJ, that are occasionally annoying or can even get in the way of visual cues… but it’s not enough of a deterrent to stop this from being a good work out.
Overall, good workout for the whole body. You might want to mix it up with something else to create more muscle confusion in your overall training. The dvd runs about 40 minutes with cool down and warm up. I also found the cool down was pretty short. I just added some extra stretches onto my routine, and finished out strong.

This is a good total body workout. And if the DJ bugs you, after you do the routine a few times... you'll be able to block him out.
